For the Valentines…
Dear Heart, February 14

FIRE
Sea level rises to danger
electricity flows on full power
physical law violation
is what you are
Language dissolves when you're talking
how do you moan like a cello
I'm on spinning reserve
can't black-out
Confrontation with the possible
conviction needed flair required
rename the planet Earth
I'm going through re-birth
Play with fire
I'm no liar when desire is you
Play with fire
your back burn flame surrounds my heart fire
Hit the dirt and I bounce along
out on a slope catch my breath
climate change required
start again
Maintain my balance move my feet
attack the mountain act my age
radical style solution
don't fall out
Outstanding question needs to be
will I lose or will I win
confusion is in full supply
courage fights for my mind
confrontation with the possible
conviction needed flair required
rename the planet Earth
I'm going through re-birth
Play with fire
I'm no liar when desire is you
Play with fire
your back burn flame surrounds my heart fire

My Story:
When we went to Slovenia last year my Dad and my Uncle and my cousin and
myself went mountain climbing. We went to a place called Trenta and we
climbed 2,500 metres. When we got up there I got to sign a book to say that I was there and also they gave me a postcard with stamps to say that I climbed that high. There was still a lot of snow and that was great fun because we had snowball fights and got a bit wet.    Damir.

POETRY
To The Poet France Prešeren
(translated by Paul Selver)
     To whom
It is given to lighten the soul-fretting gloom!
     Who may
Rout the vulture that seizes the heart for its prey.
From dawn unto darkness, from darkness till day!
     Who shows
How to blot out the memory of yesterday's woes,
And the eyes before threatening anguish to close,
To flee from today with the irk of its throes!
     Thy care
A poet to be is not vain if thou dare
Both heaven and hell in thy bosom to bear!
     Nor cease
To think of thy calling, and grieve without peace!
Pevcu  France Prešeren
     Kdo zna
noč temno razjasnit, ki tare duha!
     Kdo ve
kragulja odgnati, ki kljuje srce
od zore do mraka, od mraka do dne!
     Kdo uči
izbrisat 'z spomina nekdanje dni,
brezup prihodnjih oduzet spred oči,
praznoti ubežati, ki zdanje mori!
     Kako
bit' hočeš poet in ti pretežko
je v prsih nosit al pekel, al nebo!
     Stanu
se svojega spomni, trpi brez miru!

SEEN AND HEARD

The world famous Vienna Boys Choir which celebrated it’s 500th anniversary in 1998 was founded by Slovenian George Slatkonia (Juri Sladkonja). George, who was born in Ljubljana, acquired considerable knowledge in humanities, mathematics, astronomy, music and was the first residential bishop of Vienna. The bust of George Slatkonia still stands in St Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna today. (Thank you to Edi Gobec from the Slovenian Research Center of America for supplying this information).

Domov bom šel
Domov bom šel in sredi mojskih njiv Zavriskal bom prešerno kakor svat
In vina starega se bom napil
In v slednjo hišo hitel vasovat.
Domov bom šel in sredi leh zelenih Bom legel vznak in bom strmel v nebo
In v meni več ne bo nobenih zapletenih misli,
Le ena sama sreča: svoboden ljubim svobodno zemljo.
Kdo je avtor ali pesnik?
Who is the writer or poet?

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Translator Wanted
Hello, we are a small human rights organisation which publishes on the Internet and we have plenty of bandwidth to accommodate a host of languages. It may seem strange wanting to translate into ‘minor’ ones when English is the major language on the Internet but one problem with English is that there are millions of Web Pages to choose from. Could you ask your members if they wish to translate from English to Slovenian. He/she can earn some money and help humanity at the same time. Access to a PC with a 1.44Mb floppy hard drive would be an advantage. Hoping to hear back from you.

Slovenian Ethnic School Registration
The Slovenian Ethnic School at the Slovenian Club Adelaide ‘has met the criteria for full registration as determined by the Ethnic Schools Board’. The full registration certificate will be presented to your school during a presentation ceremony later this year.
I congratulate you on achieving this status and trust that the Slovenian Ethnic School at the Slovenian Club Adelaide will go from strength to strength.’

Chairman Ethnic Schools Board

SPORTS UPDATE

8-BALL WRAP-UP
It must be something about summer, but it’s good news from both 8-Ball teams. Barry’s Premier League team went right through the summer season undefeated and won the Zone Grand Final convincingly. Mike has taken to the captaincy like a duck to water and his winter team-mates have excelled under his leadership, with an exceptional season from Phil Webb. Needless to say, they too won their Zone. The Slovenian Club is the only club/pub with two teams in the Inter-Zone Summer Finals and the results so far have been very good. Mark’s team suffered their first loss last week (20/1/99), but being a double-chance knock-out, have another life, and the boys are very confident of going further. Barry’s team is so-far undefeated and on the 27/1/99 play off for a Grand Final spot against their old enemy: The Golden Grove Tavern. C’ARN THE CLUB.
