For all of our lives here in Australia, a thread has connected us to each other, our community and Slovenia.
Years ago that thread seemed quite taught but over the years it has stretched almost to breaking point... now it’s time to reconnect; to tighten that invisible thread which binds us always to each other.
The October long weekend (2nd, 3rd & 4th) Sydney will be hosting the 36th (Youth) Concert. This has traditionally been an opportunity for the musically talented within our community to shine. This year however, we are hoping to acknowledge and showcase even broader strengths and skills within our community. We will be compressing the performance time for the concert to allow for many varied activities to be experienced over our weekend of reconnecting. Therefore we ask all performers to please supply video or DVD sample of their potential act.
Other activities planned include:
- A community fair showcasing our Slovenian Artisans’ wares – art, craft, jewelry, cooking etc
- Slovenian Short film festival
- Harmonica face-off
- Potica competition
- Lunches and activities at our Slovenian Community Clubs
- Slovenian photo exhibition/competition
Mark your diaries, tell your friends and practice your acts!! Be prepared to reconnect!
A more specific schedule of events will follow, but for now we are calling for all expressions of interest from performers and exhibitors and sponsors.

BE PREPARED!! Please submit entry forms for Concert, Artisan fair and photo exhibition by 1st September. This will allow our technical team to arrange for all of your requirements to be met. It also ensures your details are printed on programs to acclaim your talents!
Movies in The Shooters Room –
Reconnect with a bunch of old friends at Slovensko Drustvo Sydney
on Friday 1st October 6.30pm – midnight.
In a newly designed intimate venue (upstairs in old shooters room and balcony) drinks will be served, contemporary Slovenian movies will be showing and just outside you can join in with some dancing under the stars.
For the more mature group, the downstairs club area will be provided. Dinner will be available for those wishing to reconnect with good Slovenian cuisine! We will also welcome as a special guest; the Minister for Slovenians abroad from the Republic of Slovenia, Dr. Boštjan Žekš, who will be on an official visit to the Slovenian communities in Australia. He will be also our VIP guest at the Slovenian Concert on Saturday, 2nd October 2010, in Merrylands.
DJ on the Balcony – Dancing under (not with) the stars!
Join our DJ mixing both contemporary Slovenian and local music styles in an alfresco intimate outdoor location. Friday 1st October 6.30pm – midnight at Slovensko Drustvo Sydney (SDS) balcony. Just inside you can be drawn in to a world of contemporary Slovenian film.
Artisan and Community Fair - Saturday 2nd October 10am – 6.30pm
is the perfect time to Reconnect with Slovenian friends and artisans. In a beautiful marquise ‘Veselica’ venue at St Rafael’s Religious Centre Merrylands, a number of our diverse artisans will be displaying their wares. Come and browse, have a ‘kavica’, (and perhaps have your future read from the bottom of the cup), enjoy a civapcic sandwich or kranjske and much, much, more! We ask friends to share their most memorable Slovenian photos which we will feature on various screens encompassing us in the beauty of our heritage – great prizes will be awared! All potential exhibitors please remember to send in entries by 1st September.

Culture, People, Landscape – Send in your photos to be part of our digital photo exhibition for each of these 3 categories! Show us what Slovenia means to you and share your best photos with fellow Slovenians. We are giving prizes for the best photo in each category. Potica Bakeoff - calling all expert Potica bakers and tasters!
During the Artisan Fair Saturday 2nd October (about morning tea time when our tummies begin to rumble) help judge the first Annual potica baking contest. Any local masterchefs (sorry interstate guests we understand you may be disadvantaged here…) please present your best potica for judging and those of us lucky to enough to be present will don our cravats and rate your wares.
Of course amazing prizes will be awarded! All potential exhibitors please remember to send in entries by 1st September.
Concert Extraordinaire! - The traditional focus of this weekend, the 36th SLOVENIAN CONCERT will continue to be the piece d’resistance!
These Annual Concerts are organized by the Slovenian Religious and Cultural centres in Australia. This year we have brought the time forward to 3pm Saturday (2nd October) ensuring we have plenty of time afterwards to refine our polka and waltzing skills. The number and length of acts will be condensed and we ask all potential performers to send in their entry by 1st September.
Be pleasantly impressed when reconnecting to the music and performance arts of Slovenian descendents!
Community Mass - Sunday 3rd October is the culmination of all aspects
of our weekend of reconnecting! 9.30 -10.30ish is the time when all of our community groups will work as one to celebrate our faith, culture and camaraderie. A program filled with entertainment, opportunity for reflection and bonding will be presented by a variety of our talented performers and clerics.
Harmonica Face-off - After the Sunday mass we will have a light lunch available and a competition to end all competitions!! An harmonica face off!
Come and either showcase your talents or help judge the definitive winner of this prestigious award! Prizes awarded!!
WELCOME TO SYDNEY - DOBRODOŠLI V SYDNEYU!
Late in the afternoon our friends from WOLLONGONG will celebrate the 40th anniversary of their Club PLANICA.
Holy Mass will be celebrated at 3.00 pm in the Slovenian Church of All Saints in Figtree, followed by a cultural program in the Hall. Congratulations to Planica members and friends!
